University Celebrates its 160th Anniversary by Welcoming New Alumni

MURFREESBORO, NC – Chowan University welcomed its newest
alumni during commencement ceremonies, which were held on May 10 at 10a.m.
on the Campus Green. The Honorable James P. Cain, United States Ambassador
to the Kingdom of Denmark served as the 2008 Commencement speaker. Bynum
Brown, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, brought greetings from the
Board.
During the Commencement ceremony, awards were presented by Provost and
Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Danny Moore. The Senior
Scholastic Award is presented each year to the student with the highest
grade point average. Meredith Leigh Armstrong (Ahoskie, NC) and Gregory
Gene Parker (Murfreesboro, NC) were the 2008 recipients. The Excellence in
Teaching Award was presented to Dr. Gregory Parker. Dr. Parker will serve
as Head Faculty Marshal for the 2008-09 academic year.
For his service to the United States of America, the State of North
Carolina, philanthropic causes and greater humanity, the Chowan University
Board of Trustees voted unanimously to award the Honorable James Palmer
Cain, Ambassador of the United States of America to the Kingdom of
Denmark, the Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters.
Continuing the tradition, graduates proceeded to the Susan Parker Kerr
Gazebo to ring the bell located in the gazebo immediately following the
ceremony.
