Chowan University Welcomed First Alumni Class on May 12

University welcomed 94 new alumni during commencement ceremonies, which
were held on May 12 at 10a.m. on the campus green. Five Chowan University
seniors addressed the Class of 2007 during commencement exercises that
were held at 10a.m. on the campus green. Student speakers included Jay
Howell (Roanoke Rapids, NC), Courtney Morris (Norfolk, VA), Michael
Kellett (Huntersville, NC), Marianne Weir (Chesapeake, VA), and Eddie
Bulls (Courtland, VA). The students spoke on the topics of Academic
Programs, Campus Religious Programs, Athletics, and Non-Traditional
Students. Hugh C. Vincent, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, brought
greetings from the board.
Dr. Danny Moore, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs,
presented student and faculty awards. The Senior Scholastic Award was
presented to the student with the highest grade point average. This year,
four graduates received this honor: Tricia Ann Clarke (Essex Junction,
VT), Wendy Lynn Hoag (Tacoma, WA), Jonathan W. Hodge (Murfreesboro, NC),
and James Randolph Howell (Roanoke Rapids, NC. The second award was the
announcement of the Excellence in Teaching Award. Professor Dorothy
Wallace, Colgate W. Darden, Jr. Professor of Accounting and Business
Administration, was honored with the award. The university presented
Professor Wallace with a cash prize and certificate. In addition, she will
serve as Head Faculty Marshal for the 2007-08 academic year.
President White diverted from the commencement program to award an
additional honor to Professor Wallace. The Chowan University Board of
Trustees unanimously approved for Professor Wallace to receive the
Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. This honor has allowed her to retire
with full honors from Chowan University.
Continuing the tradition, graduates proceeded to the Susan Parker Kerr
Gazebo to ring the bell located in the gazebo immediately following the
ceremony.
